Peculiar minimal techno packaged elegantly into a four-track cosmic journey of sharp and concise tunes that achieve a higher state of funk.
Romainain DJ/producer, Tangent has been working hard in the underground “rominimal” scene for years now. With a little help from his friends, Tangent delivers a cleverly thought-out musical trip. The latest release of his,
“Day dream” attracts sophisticated ears using intense polyrhythms and creative structuring. Beginning with a melancholic and carefree melody, the EP embodies a sense of wonder and thoughtfulness. The cover art (sun rays shining through fluffy clouds near dusk) relates perfectly to the nostalgic, young-again vibe maintained throughout the record. Ethereal chord stabs, funk bass, and broken kick drums take flight during the progression of tracks.
An edit of the first track introduces a power dynamic onto the field that evolves into more serious groove. Arpeggios kick the edit into higher gear, with a feeling of introspection taking over. The funk-bass echoes onwards with a maraca-esque percussion line. A dissonant computer module, fit with delay, adds to the eeriness of the journey. The combination of familiar sounds with broken beats adds a unique character to an already charismatic tune. Although the tracks are reserved, they establish a driving beat that ceases to falter during the ride.
The culmination of the first three numbers reaches a climax with “spring break”. All the pent-up energy is stored and allowed to explore new grounds, rounding out the EP the way it should be. The cheery nature of the album thus far shifts into a more sultry, deep phase. Finally, the evolution marks a pinnacle with slick groove. As the tune fades, the expedition comes to a close. Solid layout and a keen sense of musical direction allow for a very pleasurable sonic voyage.
