Black Asteroid – “Dust” (a+w LXIII) [April 2nd, 2021]

Visceral, in your face techno, fresh from Berlin. Black Asteroid bangs out four stompers sure to get the blood flowing. Utilizing dissonant tension and intelligently crafted instrumentals, “Dust” delivers brutal yet delicate tunes.

Bryan Black, aka “Black asteroid” has a pedigree that could turn most musicians’ faces green with envy. From his time as sound designer at Paisley Park Studios, working for the legendary Prince, to touring with mega-stars Depeche mode in 2009. His dark industrial sound is unique and guttural. Raw, but with a finite attention to the details in every production.

Visceral, in your face techno, fresh from Berlin. Black Asteroid bangs out four stompers sure to get the blood flowing. Utilizing dissonant tension and intelligently crafted instrumentals, “Dust” delivers brutal yet delicate tunes. All over the place in the best possible way, “Dust” has something to offer for every pair of ears. Bits of breaks here, pumping darkness there and everything in between. First thing noticed when listening is how solid the mastering of these productions are. The soundscapes are vast and finely tuned, drawing the listener in from the very first seconds. Droning bass lines are intelligently placed and structured in the title track “Dust”. An exhilarating marriage of industrial and techno makes this a standout. The balance between high-powered energy and subtle, nuanced production is impressive. Everything has its place. A remix of Dust, by “Liebknecht” (Daniel Myer) absolutely rocks the speakers. No track prior is overtly funky, but the groove is strong in this brilliant tour de force. Buildups are akin to Willy Wonka; “There’s no earthly way of knowing which direction we are going” climaxing to a John Wick stare down, ultimately breaking out into a dynamically choreographed battle. Surely a labor of love, the artistry shines throughout the journey.

In many ways Black Asteroids latest release is everything right about proper electronica. With such a masterfully crafted vision, it’s mind-boggling to see a complete absence of vanity. It cannot be overstated how well everything in the release fits together. A blueprint of industrial dance music, “Dust” achieves everything it set out to accomplish and then some. Quality and class all the way through. Surely a labor of love, the artistry shines throughout the journey. Do yourself a favor and turn the dial to 11, tune in, and let the music wash over in all its industrial glory.
