The anonymous Dutch collective unleashes a 16-pack of bouncy warehouse weapons Undivulged’s latest offering, “Delay,” is small and big at the same time.
Consider the first tune, “Atser.” One the one hand, “Atser” is small in that it’s fairly stripped back. The tune contains only a handful of sound elements, none of which are particularly overpowering. On the other hand, “Atser” is big. The kick is charged with warm, expansive reverb, making it feel as if it’s rumbling through an entire warehouse. Then there’s the kick’s partner in crime: a cheeky acid line, which itself feels small and big at the same time. The acid line is composed of a fairly simple repetition of notes (small), yet it’s swelling, up-and-down motion injects it with charisma (big).
Each of the 16 tunes on “Delay” has a similar story of smallness and bigness, which gives the release an enchanting continuity. It’s as if the release is a score for a warehouse rave – an experience which, at this point in the COVID pandemic, feels like an otherworldly cinematic delight.
For tracks 1-8, the standout is “Irkie,” track 8. The tune’s protagonist is a synth with back-and-forth bounce that commands the body to move. Below the synth is a high-pitched ethereal glow that adds space and emotion.
For tracks 9-16, the star is “Skurd,” track 12. “Skurd” stands out from the rest of the release. Whereas the other tunes tend to be driving and tough, “Skurd” is light on its feet. The tune’s sunny blips and organic percussion are a breath of fresh air (in the smoking area outside the warehouse).
We don’t know much about Undivulged. On its Bandcamp page, Undivulged aloofly describes itself as “an anonymous group of dutch dj’s and producers.” But one thing is clear: they know how to make warehouse dancers move.
