Drawner Records unleashes an immaculate sampling of techno from their global roster.
Newly emerging Berlin-based record label Drawner delivers a substantial 14-track collection of awe-inspiring modern techno from around the world. Though still young, Drawner Records has already established itself as a real contender in the techno arena, flaunting a masterful consistency in both its sound and aesthetic. The inspiration taken from techno icons of the past is not lost on us, yet the tracks on this release all feel fresh and exciting. You will be hard pressed to find a single dud on this compilation, which rarely can be said for most other compilations of this duration in any genre. It’s now time to dim the lights and submerge into Awakeness.
Perhaps as important to the success of this release as the music itself, is the immaculate curation by label head and featured artist Arkan. Much like crafting the perfect DJ set, the order in which the tracks are played is sometimes even more important than the selections themselves. Awakeness I tells a story, pairing each track perfectly with the next and propelling the energy forward and upward. It’s almost difficult to accept the fact that this is not a single artist’s brainchild, but instead a communal effort, because of how seamlessly the tracks transition into each other. Not to mention how widespread these artists are located around the world. This compilation’s cohesion is a true testament to the universal language of music, and specifically, kick-ass techno!
There are so many strong compositions on this release that attempting to decide on a favorite can feel quite burdensome. Brazilian artist Marcal’s contribution “Kinabalu” stands out for its intricate and mechanical flow, transporting you onboard a runaway steam train, while Italy’s “Alarico” will bring you to the brink of insanity with his kinky and delirious track “Control Me.” If your intention is to break a sweat in the club however, look no further than tracks 11 and 12. Nicolas Vogler unabashedly raises brows and heart rates with his driving and aggressive “Maschinefunk,” and artist no.name receives the torch and burns down the house with the following track “I Want You.” Lastly is the fresh, late-night vibe of Levzon’s “Mr Dub,” a track with more color and house influences than the rest and the perfect track to bring this release to a close.
This compilation will have you longing for extended weekends at your favorite Berlin nightclubs. Just one listen is enough to make you want to go deep down the record-digging rabbit hole, and discover more from each of these top tier producers. Despite the pandemic, techno is alive and well, and perhaps even healthier than ever before. Support these artists, and label, with a digital download.
