Yan Cook – “Unreleased” (Fiverr) [May 19, 2021]

Iconic Ukrainian DJ, producer and digital artist, Yan Cook, offers a decade’s worth of previously unreleased techno for an outrageously fair price.

Singles, EPs, Albums. That’s what we in the techno community have grown accustomed to. Very rarely do we see any variation, let alone innovation, when shopping for new tunes to add to our collections or to play in dj sets.

When it comes to underground dance music, the platforms Beatport and Bandcamp have dominated the market for quite some time, and for good reason. These services give artists more control of how their music, and sometimes merchandise, is presented, priced and bundled It’s a breath of fresh air, especially when compared to the less than ideal monetization models established by services like iTunes and Spotify, that pay artists fractions of a penny per download or stream. While each of these services have their strengths, they haven’t changed much for quite some time. That’s why Yan Cook’s latest release of one-hundred-twenty tracks on the website Fiverr truly stands out.

Yes, you read that correctly. Ukraine based techno guru Yan Cook, has decided to put out a truly substantial one-hundred-twenty-track bundle of previously unreleased tunes made over the last ten years. Upon first introduction, one can’t help but question the quality of these tracks, as a release this size is truly a rare phenomenon. How could it be possible to have this many tracks be any good on a single release? But once you dive in, you are sure to be impressed with what this package contains.

Based on the 20-track preview presented on both Cook’s SoundCloud and YouTube pages, you know Yan means business. If deep, groovy techno peaks your interest, you are very much in luck. Tracks like “Puppeteer” at minute five of the preview, and “BECHA” at minute eight, are almost too good to pass up. Deep, brooding bass lines, combined with and a delightfully nuanced house undertone will appease most rave veterans, and we’ve barely cracked the surface. “Untitled (19)” at minute eleven unleashes a thunderous intensity, while the following track titled “Iridescent” cools you down and soothes the nerves.

Each of Cook’s productions on this release stand out for their cohesion, his less is more sensibility, and his masterful control of atmospheric elements like reverb and delay, which together work in unison to establish a vivid and enticing sense of space. There are many flavors and plenty of varying styles on this release, enough to make multiple professional-grade DJ sets out of these tracks alone, several times over. Is it just me or is a release of this magnitude simply unheard of?

Yan Cook’s recent collection of unreleased music is a new and exciting offering that truly sets the bar high. Split up into three folders, titled “Raw”, “Dub”, and “Melodic”, these one hundred twenty fully mastered tunes take the labor of digging out of the equation, and can be yours for the truly reasonable price of $50. A true steal if you enjoy Yan Cook’s productions and would consider buying music from him anyway.
