Tom VR – “Soared Straight Through Me” (all my thoughts) [May 19, 2021]

The Leeds-based young gun Tom VR leaves the club behind, delivering an emotional ride fit for the concert halls.

When it comes to tunes that make you cry and boogie at the same time, few do it better than Tom VR. VR’s brand of moving club tracks feels particularly fitting at the current moment. Raving in the summer of 2021 is more than just another trip to the club – it’s an emotional rebirth into a post-COVID world.

Back in February 2021, Tom VR released Fast Track to Bliss, an ecstatic club EP that promised good times ahead. Now, VR delivers Soared Straight Through Me via the UK label, all my thoughts, spanning house and synth pop.

In total this single release features about ten minutes of music which moves away from the club and into a more abstract, reflective space. Each moment is packed to the brim.

The original version of “Soared Straight Through Me” opens with stuttering percussion juxtaposed by a warm synth that pulses like a glowing orb. Gradually, the array of sounds grows larger. A heavy bass note drives the action forward, pulling our emotions along with it as it moves up and down. Angelic strings and pained vocal blips join the ensemble, building to a crescendo.

And then things crash.

The warm synth, the strings, and the vocals fall away, leaving us with only a grating bass and crackling percussion. It’s lonely. But it’s also an opportunity to stop and reflect. We’ve been through a lot, after all.
