Format frontman Fahad Ahmad bounces back after a five-year hiatus with Green Parallel, a scintillating techno ensemble comprised of forward-thinking, fast paced tunes sure to light the dance floor on fire. Genre defying in every sense, Fahad (Measure Divide) has earned a spot at the forefront of true underground techno. Blessing clubs all over the world including Berghain, Tresor, and Stereo with his unique play on electronica somewhere in between post-punk, techno, and industrial. This release is given to us by the formidable “Clergy” record label amongst other powerhouses including Dax J, James Ruskin, and head honcho, Cleric.
Patterns leaning towards the monotone spectrum begin and remain prevalent throughout the EP but provide layers of depth and a sense of wonder. Imagining a dystopian setting is easily achieved when delving into what the release has to offer. Off color instruments maintain intrigue immediately and seldom let off the brakes allowing for the skewed, devious character of the tracks to shine through. While a constant pulsating energy keeps pace, a headspace is created enabling an ambient shadow to loom overhead, progressing the introspective nature, only captured briefly in the timecode.
The songs, especially the first two tracks, take on a philosophical, if not nihilist, pathway designed for introspection alongside its natural dance energy. The third track “Polaroid” is comprised of a more familiar, sinister techno groove. Percussion is switched into overdrive along with a brutal kick drum, powering the drive with only slight breakdowns along the way. Dissonant sirens meld with high pitched acid waves separating itself from the rest of the EP’s listings. Tones similar to a whining elephant drone and echo onward keeping the track on a clear-cut path to the finish.
An extremely catchy lick starts the final groove “Druem” off followed shortly after by phasers and well-timed cymbal crashes. Upfront and visceral, the groove is constant and mesmerizing. Destined for a grimy basement with its rumbling low end and in-your-face attitude. The levels are spot on, granting girth to every pattern involved without overpowering any one loop. Clever use of cut-offs on the vocal samples keep the listener on their toes. The choppy drums merge in a slick manner with the high hat creating a liquid atmosphere. A surefire track for the dance floor that will make techno heads rejoice.
The ebb and flow of “Green Parallel” is complex and mysterious making for a unique journey down a darker road. The productions are efficient and capture creative feelings that transfer well when listening. After his five-year break, Measure Divide proves that he has not missed a step, and has evolved his signature style. We can only hope it is not five years until the next release!
