Hangora – “Pyralidae EP” (Melifera Records) [May 18, 2021]

Two minds are better than one: duo of siblings Hangora release a haunting and shamanic take on minimal house.

For a record label as new as France’s Melifera, a release of this caliber is difficult to fathom. That said, the artists behind the label have been hard at work dabbling in a plethora of creative pursuits, from events such as La Vallée Electrique, an in-nature festival that takes place every summer in the southern France, to developing their very own magazine. With this in mind, it makes sense that they would cut to the chase with a short but potent release like Hangora’s recent Pyralidae EP.

If house music were a beautifully colored butterfly, Hangora’s sound would be that of the pyralidea, the family name for a species of moth. The first track “Blossoming of Life” is the perfect depiction of this. While all of the elements of a tropical house track are present, the minor key and dark brooding melody don’t quite portray a typical sunny beach mood, instead an anxiety fueled chain-smoking session in the dark corner of a beach bar after sundown. The looming pad in this track at least somewhat resembles the lead in Claude Von Stroke’s iconic tune “Who’s Afraid of Detroit”, another exceptionally deep, dark house classic that is equally groovy and mysterious. As the track progresses, a chopped up vocal sample meanders around a bouncy, staccato, bass line, further adding to the paranoia this track can produce. DJs will be eager to rinse this one out.

The brothers that make up Hangora truly excel at concocting infectious grooves. The title track, “Pyralidea” is fresh and precise, with a festive but laidback sound that would excel at an after hours, outdoor jungle fiesta. The organic, lush percussive elements in this tune are perfectly paired with subtly psychedelic synths and textures, making it an ideal track for the highly acclaimed artist Bryz to remix.

To have Bryz remix one of your tunes, you need to be doing a lot of things right. The highly acclaimed Romanian minimal tour du force, though still young, has a discography that can recon with many of the most seasoned vets in the game, and is key player within the rapidly growing underground sub genre that is ‘ro-minimal’. Hangora must have been elated to have Bryz come on board with his mesmerizing remix of their title track, and so are we. Cutting drums and a deep, bubbly melody does the trick every time. Bryz is truly a master at what he does, and only listening at a proper event can do his sound justice.

Keep an eye out for more exceptional music to come from Melifera Records, Hangora and Bryz alike. Though the artists and label are relatively new, there is nothing amateurish about this release. Download the EP on Melifera Records’ Bandcamp in the link bellow.
