U.K. techno dons James Ruskin and Mark Broom are back together on Blueprint with “Basement Jams 2”, the sequel to their superb collection of minimalist, sweat-inducing techno beatdowns last year.
“Latch” starts off right where they left off back in August 2020 with a bouncy, booming kick and swinging drums that scream for a damp basement rave. Add a wonky acid synth sequence and you have the main ingredients to “Basement Jams 2”.
“Twister” and “Zone” bring more jackin’ beats with some different “twists” and “zones”. “Twister” screws with the synth sequence timing for a trippy, off-kilter feel while “Zone” stays in its own lane of stripped-down shuffley grooves for a powerful tension-builder at the midway point.
“Drive” and “Arc” both sport up-front open and closed 909 hi hat patterns that assume control of the energy levels. The finale tracks differ in that in “Drive”, they do hard changeups every 8 bars that “drive” quick movement alterations, whereas in the latter, the duo “arc” the energy buildup for longer routines, showing the UK duos mastery of the breakdance floor.
A pleasant surprise less than a year from the original basement jams release, the techno world will certainly be impatiently awaiting the next time these top-notch producers get in the studio together.
