When Four Tet, Thom Yorke, and Rosalía all ask you to remix their music, you know you’re doing something right. Such is life for Overmono, the English duo who run London based label Poly Kicks. Their two pack “BMW Track/So U Kno” is set to dominate the warehouses and festivals alike in the summer of rave renaissance.
When Four Tet, Thom Yorke, and Rosalía all ask you to remix their music, you know you’re doing something right. Such is life for Overmono, the English duo who run London based label Poly Kicks.
Overmono occupy a unique space in the dance music scene. On the one hand, their knack for pulverizing breakbeats firmly roots them in the underground. On the other hand, their tunes have a light and emotional quality, making Overmono right at home at daytime festivals, and at indie icon XL Recordings, where they have previously released.
This duality is captured in Overmono’s latest work BMW Track / So U Kno, a two track EP released on Poly Kicks. Track 1, “BMW Track,” comes out swinging. Crispy breakbeat drums get things moving and enjoy the spotlight in the early moments. A throbbing bassline rudely interrupts, taking over the listener’s attention. The bassline fades around the three-minute mark, making room for airy, glowing synths. The synths pluck the tune from the depths of the warehouse and elevate it to a euphoric space amongst the clouds.
Track 2, “So U Kno,” turns the bass down and the vocals up. A grooving and kinetic vocal sample takes the lead, flanked by simple breakbeats and growling yet subdued bassline. A wavey and high-pitched synth joins the ensemble. It feels like a rave in an underwater cave.
BMW Track / So U Kno is a quick trip from the warehouse to the clouds, then underwater. Settle in.
