Remembering Paul Johnson and K-Hand

Dirty Epic mourns the loss of two giants of House and Techno music in the US.

K-Hand, also known as “the first lady of Detroit.” Her legacy is felt by countless artists who recognize the passing of this trailblazer, especially for women in electronic music. In her early life, she found inspiration through the New York City club scene. She produced her own records, and was label owner at Acacia Records, originally UK House Records. Her fans remember her steadfast dedication to turntablism, expert house grooves, and skillful analogue productions.

Paul Johnson is a protagonist in the history of Chicago House. After suffering a spinal injury from an accident at age 16 that made him wheelchair-bound, he continued to pursue a career in dance music. From the iconic 1999 track “Get Get Down” to his lifetime production of 445 EPs (according to Resident Advisor), to his treasured performances worldwide, Paul Johnson embodied these words with his life, “House music, from my mind, to my heart, Thru my hands. The message is universal.”
