Bored Lord traverses summertime romps and late night jams in her five-tune heater, Neither Dusk Nor Dawn.
Two thousand and twenty-one has been a big year for Bored Lord. The Oakland, California native has already dealt seven releases, including a 15-track compilation album in January. In July, she graced the decks of Nowadays in Brooklyn, NY at a 24-hour event alongside heavy hitters Four Tet and Galcher Lustwerk.
In her most recent offering, Neither Dusk Nor Dawn, Bored Lord serves a wide range of sound and emotion. Some tunes are pure fun; others are pensive late-night thinkers.
“I Can Feel It” is infectious joy with an edge. Crisp breakbeats anchor the tune, lighting a spark of excitement at the get-go. A vocal refrain – “that get’s my heart pumping” – pops off bright, housey piano chords. It’s summertime day rave rapture. Bored Lord turns up the grittiness around the one-minute mark, injecting a thudding bassline that undulates below the brighter sounds.
“Hypnotizing,” the other standout tune, is a more introspective cut. Bouncy, yet distorted synths open the tune. They sound like futuristic alarm bells, but groovier. A slow, brooding bassline joins, juxtaposing the frenetic energy of the bouncy synths and settling the tune into a steady flow. Chic chords sit in the middle, offering a palate cleanser between the excited synths and a dark bassline. It’s the soundtrack to a late-night drive after a day that’s thrown a bit of everything at you.
Neither Dusk Nor Dawn is yet another feat in Bored Lord’s already impressive 2021.
