DJ T-1000 – “Prisma EP” (Sound of Berlin) [August 27, 2021]

Alan Oldham aka DJ T-1000 is back with a new EP barely one month since his last release “The Dirrty Underground” EP on BPitch Berlin. This time the Detroit native switches gears from raw and jacking to polished and deep, while sticking with an imprint in his current city. The Sound of Berlin label was created in late 2020 following the documentary of the same title, and has already featured releases from techno legends such as Marc Houle and Dan Curtin.

The title track “Prisma” instantly encompasses Oldham’s change in direction from his usual raunchy in-your-face style of hard minimal techno. The laid-back beat and uplifting chord progression reach back to the early deep house sounds of Detroit, while a unique detuned lead synth gives the abrasive edge that his fans are used to. A rich and modern mixdown breathes life into the simple yet effective rhythms while the Berlin-based producer perfectly builds and releases tension in the arrangement with his trusty go-to 909 hats, rides and claps.

Making sure you don’t think he’s gone soft, he bumps the bpm back up on the b-side to his usual territory of the mid-high 130’s and darkens the vibe with eerie pads and tougher drums. “Glitch Behavior” assumes the same attention to detail on the mixdown with a full frequency spectrum and warm yet punchy sound processing, especially noticeable on the slicing hi-hat patterns. The track also features a full breakdown into just the synth pad to further alienate himself from his usual sound. All in all, Oldham creates a unique EP that is sure to fit into lots of differently styled sets whether the dj is a die-hard T-1000 supporter or a brand new fan.
