Berlin techno mainstays Fadi Mohem and Rødhåd team up for a luscious four-track EP on Rødhåd’s collaborative label WSNWG. Using the sounds created from the WSNWG x STOOR studio session that was streamed via Twitch in April, the final product embodies the live energy and atmosphere of the session while utilizing the masterful producers’ arrangement and mixing skills to create the dj-friendly ensembles.
Opening with “210407.1” the German duo set the tone for the record with a thumping kick and dubby synth stab as its foundation. What continues is a pure techno drum machine workout only bothered by a few subtle builds and synth tweaks. The live element of the recording process really takes hold of the groove and transports you to a relentless dance floor as seen throughout the record.
“210409.1” comes in next with similarly affluent drum tones, while this time including more atmospheric and melodic elements resulting in a more thematic outcome. Heavily apparent peaks and valleys sway the listener through its duration while staying grounded thanks again to the static kick and stabs in this more standardized techno arrangement.
Straying even further away from the minimal opener, “210407.2” brings a shimmering reverb into the mix to drive the EP into hypnotic territories. The dreamy reverb consumes the high frequency energy for an airy lightness that counters the intense jacking kick and hi-hat partnership. Again, the live recording process brings out the best in naturally progressive arrangement tweaks which are sure to do wonders on the dance floor.
“210407.3” completes the first-time collaborators’ exceptional record with a drastic change-up. Breaking up the four-to-the-floor beat and using ominous tones creates a deep and dark atmosphere for a much more haunting vibe than the previous tracks. Although keeping their unstoppably tight groove and mixdown style keeps the finale consistent with the first three tracks, cinematic fx whooshes and trippy acidic synth lines set it apart and give the b-side the drastic change up needed for a truly dynamic EP.
