American techno veterans Josh Wink and Truncate come together on Wink’s famed Ovum Recordings imprint for the first of their two collaborative EPs.
Resulting from a collaboration at Truncate’s studio in Los Angeles, the two underground giants dish out a clean and calculated mixture of their styles. Expect tight grooves and catchy vocals on Be Aware EP.
The original mix starts the record off with an overdriven kick and wavering bassline to set the darkened mood before the trippy vocals arrive. FX swooshes move from side to side introducing the up-front vocals while the pair brings tasteful drum patterns in and out of existence to up the psychedelic ante. Progressively adding more drums and delayed effects as the track builds, the producers show off their expert mixing and arrangement skills resulting in a top-notch techno composition destined to tear up the dance floors that it finds.
Truncate also delivers an alternate mix, raising the bpm and drying out the room reverb for a more minimal/jacking feel. By exchanging the smooth and low sub bass for a bouncy percussive line, the LA producer gives it a more up-beat and relentless vibe catered to his DJ sets. Also included in the EP is an acapella of the vocal recording allowing DJs to inject the memorable speech into their sets however they wish. Altogether a fantastic release sure to leave the world yearning for what’s to come on their next joint effort.
