Berlin-based Pure Sonik Records boss Alan Oldham, aka DJ T-1000, unveils the label’s first output of the year, expanding on his Detroit-bred minimal sound with four new modern techno cuts. “Don’t Complain, Don’t Explain” EP also features a remix from red-hot Gene Richards Jr.
“Untergang” bangs energy straight off the rip with an exquisitely mixed drum workout of clap rolls and cymbal lines taking on the task of potent dance-move ignitors. With a mean kick and tight swinging groove, the relentless nature of the opening track is halted only once by a delayed percussion intermission.
“Codeswitch” keeps the energy up with another fast-paced warehouse gem. Featuring a dark mechanical bassline and mysterious synth soundscape halfway through, the track yearns for late night dance floors as it journeys from minimal to mystical.
“Indonesian Girl” lightens the mood with a groovy interlude of funky rhythms and blissful breakdowns. A bright synth melody and crisp cymbal patterns show the deeper, soulful traits in the techno legend’s arsenal.
“Resonance” fires back to the intense jams with a distorted acid track containing an infectious jacking groove, perfect for remix re-imagination from the fresh, jack-oriented mind of Gene Richards Jr. The original mix stays short and nasty at four and half minutes of pounding lewdness, while the young remixer tames the acid and fashions a mesmerizing arrangement, making for a tight ending.
The entirety of the pronounced first release of 2022 for Pure Sonik Records has a fresh and lively sound from start to finish. “Don’t Complain, Don’t Explain” EP is available now on Bandcamp and on most digital platforms soon.
