Serbian DJ/Producer Lag’s first release of 2022 is also the first release this year for Jerome Hill’s legendary techno imprint, Don’t Recordings. “Clique Of One” EP shows the talented producer’s unique style of energetic, broken beat techno, veering from heavy to dubby at the flick of a switch.
“Svinja” starts off the release with a massive kick nailed tightly to a bouncing groove among razor sharp percussion and synth sequences. Rave influences run rampant as trippy one-shots and effects coming from every direction keep the track stimulating from start to finish in this robust introductory number.
“Znoj” continues the twitchy two-step vibes, this time with dubbier influences, especially during the build-ups featuring tasteful reverb and delay usage. The old-school sounds incorporated feel as fresh as can be thanks to the producer’s forward-thinking mixing and arranging abilities which give the track a unique sensibility eager for repeat plays.
“Frka Frka” starts off the b-side with a jungly breakbeat alongside yet another fresh, rarely used kick rhythm. A mean and relentless bassline counters the evolving rave stab melody for a full bodied dance floor assault that moves through numerous peaks and valleys throughout its seven minute duration.
“Ko Si Danas” finalizes the record with another hybrid two-step dub adventure featuring twisted, warbling synth stabs and pads with creative vocal sampling that together concoct a psychedelic atmosphere for Lag to go wild in.
As seen throughout the record, expertly positioned sounds are mixed with care into their own pockets to give an impressively glued sound albeit so much going on. “Clique Of One” EP makes for another home run release for both the Serbian producer and UK record label.
