Tresor continues its 30th anniversary run of releases by introducing quickly rising Detroit DJ/Producer, Ann-Marie Teasley, aka The AM, to their global influence with her exceptional debut solo “Black Majik” EP. A four track voyage of distinctly Detroit sounds forged together in an original manner by the fresh talent, “Black Majik” EP is solidified at the end with a remix from always-on Motor City techno/electro legends, Scan 7.
Teasley’s starts off her seminal effort vocalizing the title track “Black Majik” over a classic Detroit dance rhythm caked in swing. Minimally accented by synthesized organ stabs, the drum arrangement and vocals take center stage, presenting a hot new take on the funky techno sound that was created around her growing up.
“On Joy Road” cuts right to the chase in showing off of her creative dexterity, changing lanes and pitching down her vocals with a dreamy electro number. Delightfully riding the line of both old school and futuristic, classic synth sounds clash against pristinely knocking drums that host an insatiable groove alike the first outing.
Jumping into the b-side, “Shadow Werk” brings a whole new flavor to the record, presenting a jacking drum workout loaded with unique sonic flavors. The AM again processes her own vocals, doing the ‘werk’ to express a lyrical theme to the already thematic elements like tripped-out synth design and an explosive rumbling bassline.
Scan 7 pick up the honor of closing out the inaugural record, “Black Majik” EP, for The AM with a top-drawer “Shadow Werk” remix. Reimagining the beat and melodies while retaining the vocals, the illustrious Detroit producers create a hypnotic journey that charges forward, slows down, detours, and eventually winds down into a profoundly smooth finish of robustly classic Detroit techno.
“Black Majik” EP is available now on bandcamp and streaming platforms.
