Jens Lewandowski – “Edda” EP (Supdub Records) [March 24, 2022]

Germany’s Jens Lewandowski unleashes “Edda” EP featuring three new club-ready tracks for iconic minimal techno label, Supdub Records.

Though you’ve likely never heard it’s name, few labels have had as big of an impact on Berlin’s underground techno scene as Alfred Heinrich’s Supdub Records, and producer/DJ Jens Lewandowski has been a key player since its inception. During the minimal wave of the mid 2000s, Alfred Heinrichs and Sascha Braemer united to form Berlin’s minimal techno super duo, Heinrichs & Hirtenfellner. These two are revered for having influenced much of the Berlin sound as well as other parts of Germany’s underground scene, still prevalent to this day. The duo took Berlin by storm, injecting their hyper-dark, often surreal, minimal techno sound into the zeitgeist, influencing countless others with their unique, stripped back approach to techno. While their collaborative efforts would eventually come to an end, a handful of artists like Jens Lewandowski would go on to be key players in developing the signature Supdub sound alongside Alfred Heinrichs.

A full decade has passed since Lewandowski‘s first release on the label, yet he’s still an essential member of the label, releasing exceptional tracks quite often on par with those of the label’s founder himself.

Title track “Edda” starts off the EP with a booming kick at a relaxed pace, oozing with dark and foreboding club-primed ambiance. Precise, rigid hi hats and a short clap elevate the mood, creating an irresistible call to the dance floor. Bright melodies periodically come swelling in to offer a brief moment of transcendence that nicely juxtaposes the track’s dark, sinister foundation. Lewandowski then picks up the pace with a brisk and jacking flow on “Suspicious Content.” Contrasting elements coalesce into a grand climax from the joyous melody to the aggressive sound design straight from the underworld. Lightness and darkness at both extremes and with a full-bodied beat keep things moving–this is what Supdub is all about, and for fans of the label, it’s what we’ve come to expect and want.

The closing track “Long and Short,” offers a comforting sound perfectly suited for a stroll through the park or for refresher before leaving the club at sunrise. This grand finale will likely evoke feelings of nostalgia and peace of mind without losing a beat. Lewandowski and Supdub in equal parts have both blossomed into an unmistakable sound that combines raw dance energy with mystique, pure emotion, and ecstatic bliss.

For fans of the label, Jens Lewandowski’s latest “Edda” EP will check all of the right boxes, but even if you’re new to Supdub, the EP is a great starting point to familiarize with their distinct sound. Jens Lewandowski proves he’s at the top of his game and a producer to watch. As Supdub blossoms, so does this talented artist.
