Truncate – “The Drill” EP (Truncate) [April 1, 2022]

Los Angeles veteran DJ and Producer David Flores aka Truncate’s latest offering “The Drill” EP highlights the techno tastemaker’s ability to surprise his audience with each new release on his self-titled label. While pursuing flavors of old school acid and even gabber on the b-side, Flores stays the course of his signature, swinging raw techno style on the front and includes his cutting edge engineering prowess throughout.

“The Drill” starts off in classic Truncate fashion with a soothing intro soundscape dramatically cut off into high energy, jacking techno. Pounding bass and funky synth lines follow the drum workout that ensues for a full five minutes of dancefloor destruction, assertively setting the bar at the tippy top before unleashing the tricks up his sleeve onto the rest of the record.

“The Hammer” fires off next with an infectious groove that jolts your body as the kick hammers down as mightily as the title suggests. Keeping things minimal with short reverbs that occasionally flare out, the drum arrangement does the heavy lifting scream for a late night warehouse dancefloor number to induce sweat fits onto.

“The Closer” ravages the b-side with two versions of an acid techno number, the original featuring an atypical bpm changeup section for the intrepids and a straightforward mixdown for those hesitant to close the night with gabber speeds. A tasty acid treat either way, Truncate connects on his swing for the fences and completes yet another quintessential record for his legendary label with “The Drill”.
