Tapefeed – “Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster” EP (mord) [March 11, 2022]

Slamming industrial tracks filled with debauchery and complexity come out of Tapefeed’s “Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster” EP on Rotterdam’s mainstay label, Mord. The enigmatic duo of INOB and Ricky Vayo known as Tapefeed brandishes dark, breakbeat-influenced techno with extra funk and rhythm. Well rounded and dedicated to their craft, Tapefeed are seemingly just getting started with no signs of slowing down. This latest release combines raw, sturdy percussion with slick production techniques, putting massive power behind the sultry and sinister sonics.

Warped microcosms of sonic bliss and a precise cadence define opening track “Lidocaine”. Eerily spoken acapella warbles throughout as strong percussion brings the track’s energy to the forefront alongside a cleverly dictated, catchy rhythm. The kick drum in “Stoned Face Hysteria” brings the sonics to a more groovy style of techno while a hollow drum kit rounds out the high end. Drawn out squelches from the main line synth bring tension to the track, similar to the sound of a jet engine powering up. As the beat progresses, the kick turns into a rolling pattern accompanied by snare shots and quick cymbal hits that continue the momentum until it quickly fades out.

Dissonant and striking gong-like sounds start off “Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster” EP’s third track, “Voodoo Injection,” immensely filling your headspace with stretched, compressed bass stabs creating mystery and suspense throughout. “Drone Button Pusher” comes flying out of the gate with that quintessential, beloved techno kick. The efficiency and fragility of the stems add character to this devious production, making it extremely easy to get lost in. The final offering, “Limitless,” is filled with clever sound effects and a massive array of gravitational lines that lend to this monolithic close to the EP. Once more, the percussion takes the track to new depths as it develops, providing stunning grooves and poignancy.

Massive, banging techno dominates this “Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster” EP by Tapefeed. Though dark and imposing, this latest release off mord offers a unique balance of dark and light, creating a deep and complex story from start to finish.
