One of Spain’s most elusive techno producers, Linear System returns to Glasgow’s Edit-Select Records with hypnotic “Kinetic Energy” EP.
“Kinetic Energy” marks Linear System’s latest release on Edit-Select, having first released on the acclaimed label back in 2020. Though mysterious, Linear System consistently produces tracks that are played out by many of your favorite DJs. From Richie Hawtin to DVS1, many of the finest techno artists across the globe are rinsing tracks from this incredible talent. Not only does Linear System constantly release top quality tracks, but he’s even started sharing his wisdom and expertise around production, offering several online workshops to all who inquire.
The title track sets a brisk pace to start off the EP, leading you to the far corners of an alternate reality. Randomized deep tones elegantly meander around the kick while a modular synth lead boils over the edges. Each element steadily rises and falls independently, creating a loose, organic flow that keeps you locked in and fully engaged.
Next up, “Inertial Confinement” takes you further into the unknown with unhinged, melodic phrasing and psychedelic sound design. Distant-sounding strings follow to create a sense of anticipation and cleanse the palate after an intense sonic journey.
The third track, “Plasma”, is an elegant and serene cut that could shimmer on even the darkest of dance floors. Pleasurably haunting and intoxicating, the dainty music box lead is expertly juxtaposed with driving drums and a thumping bass.
The closing track, “Tokamak”, offers a bit more vigor and intensity compared to the rest of the EP. Heavy syncopation is the name of the game here, creating a rolling effect best enjoyed on a massive sound system. Ominous, cinematic pads build up to an epic climax with a brief moment of silence before the beat drops one last time.
Delightfully bubbly and bouncy, yet daunting and foreboding, “Kinetic Energy” EP starts and ends on a high note and stands out as a truly exceptional addition to the artist’s impressive discography. Linear System’s skills and output have snowballed over the last couple years, elevating him to somewhere among the best producers in the genre. He is certainly a producer to keep an eye on.
