Amsterdam-based label, OOM Records, delivers a stellar 6th release with “Power Dynamics” by FORUM.
OOM Records is rapidly establishing itself as a label to keep up with, each release meticulously crafted for seasoned fans of techno in its purest, most hellacious forms. This latest “Power Dynamics” EP emerges from this powerhouse of a label, as Miami-based producer FORUM is likely to satisfy techno fans in a way they haven’t experienced in quite some time. His debut on the label marks his first official release, however, it is clear that we can expect to hear much more from this up and coming talent in the years to come. Now’s the time for us to sit back and witness FORUM propel his sound into the spotlight.
Though still early in its inception, Amsterdam-based techno label OOM Records is already making waves. Drawing us in time and time again with unique, overtly abstract album artwork, typically resembling something only an android could dream up or hallucinate, the handful of releases put out by OOM Records so far have each stood out for boasting some of the most novel techno takes of this decade.
The opening track, “Backstab,” wastes no time delivering the goods. Frantic melodic phrases blend seamlessly with busy percussion, all while pumping around a massive bass drum. A short-lived breakdown offers a brief moment to catch your breath, only for the beat to back in with even more fervor. The next track, “Convince,” comes in swinging with a swanky bass groove and cutting edge sound design. This track feels like something new; a miraculous culmination of original, forward-thinking timbres and familiar rhythms that are sure to please. Bubbly, bouncy tones scatter, transform, and evolve.
FORUM consistently keeps things moving so as to never give his listener a single moment of boredom or ounce of fatigue. Just as the energy and pace seems to reach their peaks, FORUM kicks things into overdrive with dark and powerful cut, “Confront.” Hard, fast, dark, and cutting, the track blazes a hot inferno of a tune. A sharp, staccato pluck on the offbeat keeps you grounded while chaotic hi hats and rides propel you into outer space.
To close things out, FORUM lets loose with the messy and aggressive finishing track, “Stalk.” Rich in polyrhythmic exploration, “Stalk” slides in and out of order, giving the track an extremely raw peculiarity, not recommended for the faint of heart. As the layers build and subsequently vanish, moments of clarity emerge, giving the audience a rush of motivation and an irresistible pull towards dancing with everything they’ve got.
