Johannes Kolter, aka DJOKO, slings four groovy jams on newly established, Bandcamp exclusive release, “HOOVE Brau – Vol. 4.8%”. Old school flair and squeaky clean bass lines come together harmoniously to create feel good house music from start to finish.
DJOKO is an absolute production machine, seemingly releasing on a weekly schedule with impressive consistency. On this “HOOVE Bräu – Vol. 4.8%”, he’s able to extend his jazzy style in an experimental direction with lovely melodies and funky breakdowns.
The word ‘funk’ immediately comes to mind when the release starts playing the first track, “What is Love”. Kick drums drone with acapella boldly stating “What… is…. Love…”, a timeless sample in circulation for ages. This track takes the stance of Johannes’ usually laid back, groovy style and adds a focused percussive background with more depth than appears at first.
Whimsical synth sweeps comprise the meat of the EP’s second track “Missing”. “Channel” is a brighter sounding roller that keeps the tight, bass-heavy output while opting for a cheerier, if not slightly dissonant, vibe. The track fits the narrative of the release, stimulating dopamine receptors with lively triangle clangs and shining chorus. “Wo ist die Caritas”, the third offering, translates from German to “where is charity”. Organic-sounding piano chords connect with acid-esque squeals for a ‘90s rave energy kind of feel. Robotic and mechanical while fresh, it allows forward thinking ideas to breakthrough and flourish, making “Wo ist die Caritas” an early choice for the released single.
DJOKO channels electro breaks under his alterago alias and last name, Kolter for the final track on “HOOVE Bräu – Vol. 4.8%”. It is a definite mash up of styles and genres, titled “Electro Ghetto Funk”, featuring washed-out auto tune and the prototypical boom bap loved by breakbeat fans worldwide. Choosing to utilize snazzy percussion once more, this time with shaking tambourine and sharp snare shots, Kolter establishes a solid, groovy, funk with some fun ideas in between.
