IGLO – “Axiom” EP (Warok) [June 29, 2022]

Modern Techno collides with Ancient Egyptian mythology in IGLO’s latest “Axiom” EP for French label Warok.

Inspired by Ancient Egyptian mythology, German Techno producer IGLO’s latest “Axiom” EP feels like a refreshing new concept. Though at times quite subtle, the EP’s track titles, occasional vocal samples, and even aspects of its sound design all orient around the concept of the scarab and its symbolic significance in Ancient Egyptian civilization. Forget downloading tracks good enough for the warehouse, these cuts will go off even in pyramids.

Starting off the EP is dark and menacing dancefloor destroyer, “The Act of Resurrection.” A bubbling, brooding lead echoes and swells, eventually morphing into a bright, aggressive stab that barks and bites. Gradually, the percussive suit begins to unravel, slowly revealing some of IGLO’s impressive arsenal of drum-hits and fills.

The second cut, “Scarab,” takes on an even more unnerving, hypnotic aesthetic. Faint growls meander in the listener’s peripherals while sporadic melodic tones burst out, varying in volume, and following no cohesive key or scale. The unpredictability of this track would undoubtedly make for a welcome moment of spontaneity to break free of the monotony of a set that feels too repetitive or is dragging on.

The third track, “Sun’s Way,” is the first of the four to feature a vocal sample and is simply exquisite. Breathy pads start off feeling smothered but eventually rise into clarity. A smattering of deep rolling tones eventually come flooding in, elevating the groove and filling in the empty space.

Lastly, IGLO’s closing selection, “Chepre,” balances its brash and bright electronic grooves with a soothing voice that feels mystical and sacred. The juxtaposition this creates leads to an exciting, long-lasting feeling of elation and surprise and is the perfect way to bring this “Axiom” EP to a close.
