Regal86 – “Escándalo” (Regal86) [June 30, 2022]

Regal86’s latest “Escándalo” LP further cements him as one of Mexico’s most prolific producers.

Proving to be one of Mexico’s top electronic music producers, Regal86’s latest “Escándalo” release demonstrates his versatility, both in taste and technique. Ranging from House, Electro, and Breakbeat to Acid, Techno, and even Hip-Hop, Escándalo feels like an eclectic amalgamation of genres that don’t typically blend this seamlessly into each other. Not only does the album deliver fresh and innovative tracks perfectly suited for fans of underground music, but it also incorporates subtle political undertones that at times make the LP feel challenging, relevant to the times, and personal.

The introduction “Police” is a dark and foreboding opening tune. Upon first listen, it isn’t clear what the disheveled background voice is saying, but as a listener you immediately know it’s nothing to smile about. Sounds of sirens create an unnerving ambiance, when suddenly, a massive drum beat breaks out for a brief moment. The voice begins to wail in agony, and it isn’t until you read the album’s description that we learn that the voice is a recording of man pleading for his life in south central Los Angeles, the city in which the album was recorded.

Already off to a dark and very serious start, the next track comes rushing in with an aggressive dance beat. “Puro Cholo Loco” is the title of the second track, and it certainly changes the mood and pace. As sirens ring and cymbals clash, the beat builds up into a chaotic burst of pure raver bliss. Hints of Acid bass lines sprinkled in add to the track’s intensity, pushing it over the top. Next, the track “Corduray” comes in at the perfect time to offer some levity and relief. A majestic vocal sample starts off the tune, completely going against the previously established grim mood. Light and enchanting, this track feels rushed in an oddly pleasant way. The fourth track titled “Psst Psst x Baseck” is a Neo-Electro smash hit. The one and only collaboration on the EP features Regal86’s close friend and colleague, LA’s very own, Baseck. Starting off slow, the beat suddenly explodes into a double-time bonanza, filled to the brim with distorted 808s and rolling snares. The last three tracks on the album explore Electro, Techno, and House respectively, further demonstrating Regal86’s versatility and proficiency in each genre.

Regal86’s latest “Escándalo” LP is much more than a collection of solid dance tracks. The album is chock-full of personality, old school flavor, and fresh new ideas that are sure to translate on the dance floor.
