Steve Bug and Gemini – “The Lost Trax” (CHIWAX) [July 7, 2022]

“The Lost Trax” are two previously unreleased, ultra funky studio jams from two of the most consistent and weathered producers in the game. Steve Bug and Gemini bless the masses with pure old school bliss, releasing on timeless record label, CHIWAX.

A seriously divine recording session in which the two developed these righteous grooves went down in Steve’s Berlin studio 22 years ago. Released on the German label for the first time, CHIWAX put out classic-sounding Chicago records like hotcakes. Joined by Steve Bug on “The Lost Trax” and someone who knows a thing or two about House music production is of course Spencer Kincey, aka Gemini. A prominent figure of the second phase of Chicago House music, Gemini gained a reputation quickly for quirky, off-kilter House goodness.

Two jams appear on the release titled Bugemini #1 and #2. The first of the two commandeers serious funk with its swinging cymbal crashes and tubular bass runs. The whole track sounds like it was dipped in early 90’s Acid and washed with Chicago House. Bugemini #1 is very simple in nature but extremely well delivered with crisp tones and killer groove.

Bugemini #2 takes Afro and Latin rhythms and mixes them with heady, Deep House vibes. The combination is brilliant and spaced out, making it pleasurable to listen to from start to finish. Some jazz piano makes its way about half way through the track and is soon after joined by harmonized chord stabs that echo wonderfully into the background. In hindsight, this music was quite groundbreaking for its emphasis on sound design and symbiotic merging of the sounds of yesterday combined with the sounds of the future.

Totally cool that these artists decided to release “The Lost Trax” for everyone to enjoy. It makes you wonder or maybe wish that more stuff like this would make it to the light of day.
