Amelie Lens – “In My Mind” (Lenske) [July 15, 2022]

BBC Radio 1 resident Amelie Lens is back with her best outing to date on “In My Mind”.

Amelie Lens is a certifiable techno superstar—a well-earned title in her meteoric 8 year career. Her sets are known for an unrelenting and indisputable energy that has the ability to make enormous festival sets feel like an intimate dark club, working thousands into an unimaginable fever. Her newest EP “In My Mind”, released on her own label Lenske, might be her best outing to date. A raucous, overdriven kick introduces itself cautiously during a spoken word introduction delivered by Lens herself in cheeky, Belgian-accented English. Once it really starts striking, the kick hits with the heft of an anvil on molten Iron—a quality reminiscent of Perc’s work with Lens on his remix of her 2017 “Stay With M” track. The rapid-fire snare deploys like a Gatling gun, with percussion scattering left and right like fragments of shrapnel blown off of concrete targets. An artillery of old skool rave stabs descending midway through the title track offer just enough retro melody to transfigure a hot stomper into a molten core of hard tech.

With a preference for minimal locked grooves, Amelie Lens has brought this philosophy into the production studio. The followup, “First Light”, is no less compromising on the kick, which snaps like cold metal. Warbles of dark acid, an essential in the Belgian scene, trickle up through great dark swaths of a dystopian atmosphere. The slightly more restrained track features an ultra-dark bass line that sounds like a corroded acid line hooked up to a massive woofer straining to keep up with damaged information. The acid lashes out with a boosted electric charge on “Trippin”, which closes the “In My Mind” EP with intense peak-time energy. The kick gallops along like a wild horse as the acid fades into neuron-massaging tendrils. One can only imagine the devastating remixes she has planned for this release.
