“The Legend” is the latest release from Kiev’s Electronica wizard, Kiddmisha. Funky in all the right nooks and crannies, Kiddmisha plays with tons of generical ideas including Breaks, UK Bass, and even some Hip Hop thrown in for good measure.
This release is cut from the storytelling cloth, consisting of six tracks presumably designed to be indulged in order. Raw and raucous but with a glossy coat of polish, “The Legend” leans towards underground sounds with emphasis on deep, driving basslines. The descriptor that may come to mind initially is groovy. The percussion is forward-paced and staccato, however, there is a unique roundness to the grooves that serve as a warm invite to the lucky listener.
Amen breaks, 808s, Acid, you name it—you may find it intertwined in the measures of “The Legend”. The release seemingly draws inspiration from all over the map, but ends up smack dab in the middle of Great Britain. Aspects of the notoriously slamming UK Bass Breaks shine through on tracks like “Search” and “On my Side” while the jagged UK Garage makes itself understood on “Bounce” and “Acumen”. Familiar sound effects grace at least half the tunes with hollow echoes, like the sound of blowing across an empty glass bottle, making for a clever beat mechanic. The intelligent, yet subtle ensemble manifests a sultry, sexy energy that emanates like an old pool hall in the ‘70s. Brandished on the cover of the release is an inked woman holding a French cigarette; conceivably the maiden of the hot-shot pool shark of the aforementioned hall. In the title track “The Legend”, Kiddmisha tours a more melancholic, toned-down vibe. He then instills a deftones-ish somberness and harmony about a minute in that mellows everything down with intuitive timing.
“The Legend” stimulates the thought process of “What is a legend? What makes something legendary?” It’s a tough question in general, but the music of legends live forever. Good music hits you in the chest and buries itself deep within. Kiddmisha has a special edge to styling and “The Legend“ showcases that and extends itself to that warm niche. It is really forward-thinking Electronica in a simple, albeit pure form. Check the release out at the link provided above and look out for the artist in the hopefully near future.
