This textural “TUN011” EP from Barcelona-based Nike_Vomita and released on Icelandic label Móatún 7 draws inspiration from wind instruments, IDM, and Downtempo with a faint trace of New Age.
“TUN011” EP sounds like hearing pan flutes emanating from the mouth of a subway station filled otherwise with the electric hum of machinery and buskers drumming on unconventional found surfaces.
“Neu_0.0” is defined by complex generative patterning, part liquid DNB and part glitchy Ambient experiment. Sounds overlap, echo, distort, vanish, reappear, arrange, or align only by traces of hi hats or muted rumbling drums each trying to impose rhythm. Metallic howls and a train speeding up combine with inarticulable whispers before dropping into full on, broken-beat hysteria.
Tracks like “Salmon_Trail”, which verge on the melodically atonal, sound more like two songs trying to communicate with each other than something truly dissonant. It closes out with spooky retro sci-fi and the kind of sound design that first encouraged artists to push the limits of modular synthesis into the unimaginable. Underneath the swoops of pads, drums burst in occasionally, like errant radio waves picked up on a broken radio before departing again to let the weirdness develop on its own terms.
