Yan Cook returns to Delsin with four dancefloor weapons in “Mirror Maze” EP.
The 26-year-old Delsin record company has released its fair share of independent, groovy, and deep Techno since its inception, and this “Mirror Maze” release from Ukrainian Yan Cook is no exception to that. This label shows no boundaries when it comes to releasing music from all over the spectrum—from the hypnotizing basslines of Dub Techno to the pulsing beats of what we know is pure, unadulterated Techno. This EP has the spacy synths that we love in dubbier Techno but also that speed we all need to keep us going late into the evening. The captivating, tripped-out warmth of the EP is not really something that we see every day when searching for Techno.
“Buddy” starts off the four tracker with a high energy groover to set the tone for the rest of the EP. A relentless bassline paired with subtle synthesizers make for a mesmerizing and gripping tune that can be dropped anywhere in a set. “Lemur” is up next and begins with an arpeggiated synth wave. Within less than a minute, the bass starts to take the ears away. The track has an ominous notch about it but keeps building as it progresses.
The title track “Mirror Maze” is definitely the most rave-y track of the whole EP. A very small but effective intro kicks the whole release into high gear with its unyielding bass and profound synths. The EP finishes with minimal, speedy groover “Gambler” and has the sort of energy that can bring a crowd back from the brink. Synthesizers capture the mind but the bass easily keeps the listeners engaged. This whole EP is a bit on the minimal side of Techno and yet, the speed of it will easily make sure that no one gets bored.
