Sydney-based Willo delivers four emotional tracks with “Can Do This” EP that have the collective feeling of letting out a breath you’ve been holding in forever or of driving into the sunset away from a closed chapter.
While the sound might be a touch too wistful or chipper for the typical Dirty Epic reader, there’s a time and place for every emotion and every style of dance music given that it distinguishes itself creatively as a product of a clear love for the form.
There’s nanoscopic attention to detail in the production across Willo’s entire sophomore “Can Do This” EP, like shimmering rock candy fragments of intrigue every few moments. Even as tracks like the title track, “Can Do This,” sail along with the deceptive ease of a regatta. There’s touches of the Minimal-meets-Melodic Techno sound championed by producers like Boris Brejcha there and even moments that sound like a perfect dance remix of a pop song like Moby or Tourist might deliver.
The entire “Can Do This” EP sounds incredibly fresh and cohesive, especially for a second release, even as dance pop eases from the minimal and groovy into the snappy daytime Techno of “Control” and into the slinky lounge fare of “Eyes On Me”. The EP then progresses into alighting the stunning “Nina,” which creates the feeling of an invincible summer with a synth whirring like the motor of an aileron—a thicket of hats, whimpers, and a blinkering melody that’s almost certain to recall the best June you ever had.
