Ben Pest – “Amirite” (Mechatronica) [October 21, 2022]

Ben Pest brings a fresh Electro and Techno Breaks-inspired release to the Berlin based label Mechatronica with “Amirite”.

Ben Pest has been a pinnacle of live performances for quite some time and is no stranger to unique and interesting fusions of Breaks styles over the course of their tenure in the industry. With this recent release on Mechatronica, Pest brings focus to a lovely assortment of breaks, showcasing his versatility in that musical spectrum.

Starting off with “8 Octavial”, gritty drone pads coupled with a synth stab sequence start the release off on a high note. Fast-paced and well-formed automation work to create fervent atmospheres that inspire classic Electro swings while still keeping a modern approach and interest in the style.

The title track, “Amirite”, begins with a sequencing of percussion and synth stabs before diving headlong into the sawing sounds and glitched out synth frequencies that made Electro and Breaks the notable styles that they’ve become. The temperament of the track evolves further and further into fervency as it progresses, and the glitched out drums coupled with the reversed and sporadic synth elements create an auditory foaming of the mouth so to speak. Overall, this particular track showcases the style on a very prominent and noteworthy timeline.

“VCS” delves back into heavy, rumbling kick lines with light elements of overdriven mids and emotes a much more morphed and mind-altering tone to the “Amirite” EP. Light plucky synth patterns arrange themsleves in an almost peppered atmosphere before diving headlong back into the fray of broken beats and heavy reverberating synths.

Finally, “Strict Saws” immediately brings out a much more lighthearted tone to the overall scope of the release’s heavier and deeper driving selections previously featured. A carefree, almost House-sounding synth sequence playfully rises before Ben Pest’s signature glitchy, broken sound style once again comes to the center stage of the track. While still packing a heavy punch, the track’s percussion and glitched programming of varying saw-synth frequencies keep the tone but with the pace of a fun and bouncy atmosphere.
