Atlas Castle – “Patterns” (Atlas Castle) [October 21, 2022]

Copenhagen-based melodic Techno producer Atlas Castle delivers an impactful second album with “Patterns”.

Produced entirely through live sessions and with no digital audio workstation to speak of, Atlas Castle’s latest LP, “Patterns,” is an eclectic, elegant, and well executed melodic Techno album. Whether you’re searching for something to listen to on a long drive or digging for epic tracks to be played on a big stage, Atlas Castle may have what you’re looking for. Though his discography only goes back two years, his progression in recent months is nothing short of inspiring. With “Patterns,” we bear witness to the talented producer honing in on his signature sound.

The album incorporates many different styles and techniques to achieve something refreshing and unique. The album’s intro, “Pattern l,” features grand orchestral sweeps muddied by a thick haze of vinyl crackle and hiss. “Pattern ll” is where the beat drops and the dancing can commence. Meandering sound effects float around in a figure 8 formation, chopped up, and constantly toggling from one to another. A soothing vocal breathes in and out while Atlas Castle gets wild and expressive with his sporadic drum programming. “Pattern lll,” much like the two tracks that follow it, starts off sparse and slow but evolves into an infectious, nuanced groove, ideal for accompanying a gorgeous sunrise. Patterns lV and V, are likely to be the best received on the project as they encapsulate the appeal of melodic Techno but with the utmost style and taste. For Techno fans that want something a bit darker and for those who typically steer clear of tracks labeled “melodic,” Atlas Castle has you covered. “Pattern Vll” starts off with a menacing synth lead that gradually creeps its way toward a beautiful melody the producer is starting to be known for—a brief, but significant moment in the album that helps it feel well rounded and not too predictable.
