Vara de Garganta – “Pandelium” (Darkroom Bureau) [November 4, 2022]

Vara de Garganta’s new “Pandelium” release on Darkroom Bureau is a deep dive into hypnotic pretenses and sequencing coupled with a harder edge. Including a remix from Blank Code’s Anthony Jimenez, the release dances across a heavier but abstract approach to the DC-based label’s signature sound.

Darkroom Bureau has become somewhat of a common name being uttered across dancefloors and in artist exchanges. With the recent release of Vara de Garganta’s new “Pandelium” album which features a well-placed remix from Anthony Jumenez, it’s clear that the label has hit their stride with artist and sound selection.

Starting off in deep, dark fashion, the title track dives straight in on the odd swings and patterns that’ve become a staple of the Vara de Garganta project. Undulating sweeps of artfully static and laden synth pads decorate the foreground as drifting hats play back and forth across the auditory stage. Tactfully curated, the track begins the release on a high note.

“Foliculum” continues the broken, abstract, and hypnotic style that “Pandelium” laid the foundation for.  Minimalistic in the approach but full bodied in execution, the track has a well-produced, off-center kick sequence that pushes the scope of dancefloor expectations. Uniquely ephemeral pad structures couple well with the heavier, dystopian style and the rolling, low-laden bass and kick sequencing.

Finally, Anthony Jimenez blasts in with his remix of “Foliculum” with straight four on the floor. Notable for his rolling kick and synth lines, he has a take that is especially showcased on this remix. Slow rises and falls of synths paired with filter automating throughout the remix give a unique, thoughtful perspective to compliment the original piece’s sound design.
