Muffled kicks bely the high-BPM energy across Derelict Structures’ new “S3X//4NGEL” release.
The fast songs on S3X//4NGEL” register as something else; something half sunk in a swamp that slows time. Certain glorious drums seem to leap out of it like grasshoppers, defying the song’s internal crushing gravity. Noise pumps through certain measures like poisoned blood entering the veins.
The “Like Snowhite” track Is an unsettling melange of quarreling sounds. Nerve-wracking musical tension resolves into hellbound loops like some failed first attempt at the organizing laws of physics writing themselves into the turbulent foam of pure chaos. Other tracks persist with resilient rhythms seemingly triumphant over total bedlam, though just barely.
The total loss of organization and structure threatens every moment, pulling with entropic resistance on every downbeat and threatening to disintegrate the groove at a submolecular level. High-speed euphoria seems to carry itself diminutively, like cardiac arrest-speed tangles of kicks and hats streamlined into fragile furtive wisps of super-compacted energy.
The restless and submerged mixes of “Trance Erotica” and “Sex Mystique”—their actual titles, not editorializing—are fractured-beat drum circles haunted by uncannily echoing whispers fit for a witches sabbath.
