Mark Nëor – “Maråçeim” EP (Urban Soul Records) [December 19, 2022]

Brazil’s Urban Soul Records features a massive 3-tracker release by enigmatic Mark Nëor titled “Maråçeim” EP.

Urban Soul Records features a wealth of relatively unknown and untapped talent and artists. With their tag line reading “Sounds of the city” and many of their releases feature an eclectic range of Brazil’s underground. It’s not uncommon to find little information featuring the artists on the label’s roster in the limelight of major circuits. Contrary to the current technological standard that the world typically sees, many of the artists could be considered almost ephemeral in their presences in a digital world, and Mark Nëor seems to be another of Brazil’s best kept secrets.

“Mareim EP” houses 3 uniquely styled, select cuts that encapsulate many elements tracing back to the roots of Techno while still holding a pure take on the styles and approaches. Initially coming into the fray with thudding rumbles and plucky, modulated chord work, there’s a distinct Latin twist that immediately becomes haunting and moody. Anyone who has taken the time to listen to the short selection of mixes out from Mark Nëor can pick out the signature elements that they’ve put into the varying hybrid mixes and podcasts dotting the web.

“Percussion Swing” lives up its name with powerfully driven drum sequences and loops coupled with natural rise and falls. Upbeat in its approach, the track still creates a sense of dark corridors and alleyways, but with a deeper, more ominous feeling to it.

Ending with a bang, “Sorud” singularly takes the mind to mental, speaker-laden dancefloors and venues. Contrary to the initial two tracks of the release, “Sorud” almost hits closer to an ode to classic sounds. Simplistic in design, the track still pushes a future-thinking approach to its curation.

“Maråçeim” EP is another well-curated and meticulously-executed mark on Brazil’s underground musical movement that has been pushing more and more into the foreground of the international scope. Showing no signs of letting up, the artists that have been driving the musical envelope from its cities have established a foothold in the global Techno circuit with no signs of relenting or slowing down.
