Tony – “SUBDGTL004” (Subsequence) [January 6, 2023]

Tony marks his 4th release on his Subsequence label with “SUBDGTL004” featuring 3 tracks of singularly hypnotic and mentally-writhing Techno.

Groove-dubbed percussion and hypnotic techno—these are some of the terms that one might conjure up when listening to a set or release from Berlin-based Tony who’s become an affluent artist of a psychedelic, meticulous style of Techno that’s become commonplace on his SUBSEQUENCE label. Heavily formatted around richly textured, atmospheric elements and white echoing sound design, Tony now releases his fourth album on his own label.

“Toi1452” comes into play with sci-fi and reverb-laden pads over the top of hollow kick fronts and patterns. Distinctly ambient elements evolve throughout the track and develop the feeling into an almost dreamy state of consciousness and auditory scopes. Flitting across the timeline, the album singularly encapsulates abstract measurements and moments of the music while still pulling the mental imagery into singular aspects of the progression and evolution of the release.

“Toi1749” dives headlong into harder and more rhythmic spaces while still pushing abstract moments into the spotlight. Delay and filter-automated ringing stabs and pads are the focal point in this piece which develops a more melancholic feeling than its predecessor while still bringing out the tones that’ve made Tony’s releases on Subsequence the works of art that they are.

Finally, “Toi1266” wraps “SUBDGTL004” on a frothing, writhing note. Driving bass lines chug along with ephemeral undertones. Classic polyphonic synth noises keep the overall tone within a Techno space of auditory nostalgia as it pushes into ambient styles that don’t downplay the environment created.

With only 4 releases, Subsequence and Tony have established a well thought out and deeper, groovier take to the norm that floods in and out of the purview of digital platforms. The fusion of artistic style with classic elements and sounds establishes that the label has placed it’ fingers firmly on the pulse of the music as well as the style that both artist and label wish to push into the future.
