Blovk – “Permafrost” (Outside Noises) [January 10, 2023]

Madrid-based Techno producer Blovk delivers an exceptional fifth release for his Outside Noises imprint with “Permafrost”.

Anto Molina, better known as Blovk, has just put out some of his best work to date. His most recent output, an EP titled “Permafrost,” released this week on his newly emerging label, Outside Noises. He masterfully combines complex modular riffs with sophisticated hypnotic grooves. Beyond its exceptional production, “Permafrost” succeeds on another level. The icy terrain depicted in both the EP’s title and album artwork serves as a motif—the conceptual thread that ties these tracks together.

The first track, “Concrete Coil Nails,” is sure to raise eyebrows. While Techno is inherently rooted in repetition, this selection doesn’t at all feel that way. A bubbling bass and a meandering percussive suite just won’t sit still. Crisp and bright, yet brooding and ominous, this cut remains enthralling even after multiple plays. Next is the menacing second track, “Ice Suiture.” Filled to the brim with gorgeous textures and timbres, Blovk hits his stride with this cut. Far from boisterous, this track pulls you in with meticulous detail and nuance, encouraging its audience to close their eyes and listen closely.

Next, “A Sense of Place,” takes a turn toward a more typical, warehouse Techno aesthetic without forfeiting any of Blovk’s signature sound. Electrifying modular tones sizzle and hum, coalescing into a thick mesh. To bring the EP to a close, Blovk offers one final treat. “To Build On Permafrost,” teases a heavier groove, utilizing abrupt, thumping kicks, and swelling acid synth leads. As the EP comes to an end, the mood and pacing shifts create a keen sense of anticipation for what’s next.
