VA – “Nashville Resistance VA Compilation” (Nashville Resistance) [January 31, 2023]

The Southern label Nashville Resistance releases its third VA release in a line of well-compiled and specially-curated tracks featuring a diverse, genre-bending compilation of musical styles, techniques, and artists with their “Nashville Resistance VA Compilation” providing a multi-categorical experience featuring LoFi, House, Techno, and beyond.

Nashville is a city known for musical upbringings and footholds. Entrenched in historical artists of all styles, the city has left more than just a mark on audible expressions and history in kind. While maybe not as prevalent in common discussion of the city, Nashville also has a rich relation with various forms of electronic music. Ranging from Drum and Bass, House, and classic Dub, all the way to Techno and Hardstyle; the city has found itself once again staging a foothold in the modern musical movements. At the head of the underground, Nashville Resistance has become a household name among the Southern and Midwest scenes and beyond. They seem to constantly push the envelope on standardized practices when it comes to musical range.

Since 2021, Nashville Resistance has released 3 VA releases comprised of artists from across the country and always with a versatility in track selection unmatched by other VA releases at the time. The 2023 installment continues the legacy laid out by the 2021 and 2022 label releases with roots in almost every prospective facet of sonic engineering.

Starting out with heavily Downtempo and LoFi styles, the first three tracks feature a soft introduction to the 40-track release before bridging into more Drum and Bass-influenced inflections. The first four selections already showcase a versatility that’s become a cornerstone of these releases for the label in perfect synchronicity.

Bridging into Techno, label head Taylor Matson drives the release into four-on-the-floor stomping rhythms, setting the stage for the next wave of auditory movement on the album before leveling into the heavier and faster collection of artists. As the progression of the release moves forward, Drum and Bass comes back into play alongside more classic Dub sonics followed by a conglomerate of Breaks, House, and Hardstyle. Progressively, the later selections weave back and forth between a variety of artists and maniac-inducing singles for any musical interest before ending firmly on Hardstyle.

The entirety of the release is available for pre-order on Bandcamp. It’s not hard for the discerning ear to hear the legacy that the Nashville Resistance imprint has captured in its short tenure. The telling nature of it’s selections for the last 3 years shows that the label is a testament to the underground cooperation that created the foundations of the movement, and it has become prominent since its inception and origins.
