Fresh-faced producer Joseph Spiteri comes out of the blocks running with 4-track EP “Suki” that smokes even the most acclaimed veteran producers for this week’s new release on Liberta Records.
Time and again we ask ourselves, what makes a successful Techno track? There are those who know instinctively and are just born with the magical ability to make music as if they were whistling, there are those who have to overthink the music for years to know it inside and out, and then there are those who only have a vague idea about how to do it, do it anyway, and come up short. Sadly there are a hell of a lot of people aping the music and coming up short. In Spiteri’s case, he seems to be one of the other two but with a strong respect for Techno’s history and the leaders of his genre. He’s cited as being strongly influenced by Marcal, Cravo, and Rene Wise—a strong enough foundation for anyone.
The mechanics of this release come from a deeper understanding of the music, such as the energy and a certain push which can be found in the track “Depiction.” It is a track that has a great frenetic pulse, yet at times, it is almost too much. It is definitely one of those tracks that makes you just want to raise a fist up and yell out “Yeah!” to whoever is throwing it down. This very strong anthem is quite a headbanger and heavy groover designed to destroy the dancefloors.
The entire “Suki” EP is brilliant in the idea that it doesn’t take much to really bring about a strong release.
“Fixate” also has this energy, but it’s more of a comparatively chilled groove. “Ryo” is a reintroduction of the tribal energy that’s all over this EP but with a simple filtered chord improvisation that really ties the track together. The title track “Suki” ties up the whole EP as a statement that deftly summarizes the main concepts of energy, tribal grooves, and simple chord filtering.
Possessing a solid grooving mood, the strong pulse shakes you to your foundations and features pretty easy-going synth patterns. You get the sense that Joseph Spiteri isn’t trying too hard. He is doing what truly feels the most natural to him, and it shows. Those feelings translate well, and the satisfaction is passed on readily to the listener. The result is a true and unlabored expression of dope Techno music. Definitely one for the crate, and definitely an artist to watch for future releases.
