Uun – “Detroit Works, Pt.1” (Blank Code) [March 31, 2023]

Stripped down and richly textured drum patterns set the stage for wildly deep and arpeggiated synth explorations in Uun’s latest release on Blank Code label’s “Detroit Works, Pt.1”.

Formerly from Kansas City and currently resident of Detroit, Ryan Maloney aka Uun has really carved out a niche for himself in the field of stripped-down and dark-themed bangers. Some of which have been featured on MORD, Soma, Modularz, and of course, his own Ego Death label. A heavy love for ear-tickling distorted textures on top of well-crafted smasher kicks and body-shaking bass features thematically throughout the entire catalog.

No different here on “Detroit Works, Pt.1,” we see this theme persistent, but it is pushed back in favor of interlayering of cross-rhythms, delay, and reverb with arpeggiated synth lines on “War Cut”. Each track has a deep focus on live improvisation gliding over the drum track, like traditional Midwest 303 acid lines as well as modulating delay and reverb in time which can be seen especially in “Insect Dreams” and “We Believe in Nothing.” The delay and cross rhythmic modulation on “We Believe in Nothing” being particularly dissociative and hypnotic once you dive into the swirling synth storm around you.

Uun provides strong material for the upcoming Movement festival to bang out against Hart Plaza and the surrounding buildings and enough bass to push through even the deepest-stacked revelers in attendance. For a label like Blank Code, and Uun, this is exactly the work we’d want to hear there, and we can’t wait to hear more.
