VA – “Traumatismo 25” (trau-ma) [June 16, 2023]

Notorious Portuguese Techno label trau-ma celebrates the 25th edition of their short but consistently potent various artists compilation series, titled “Traumatismo.”

Trau-ma, one of Europe’s most highly esteemed Techno labels, has been a hub for exceptional Techno producers for nearly a decade. With its ever-growing roster of talented artists, the label has stayed at the forefront of showcasing what you might call “the modern Techno sound” since its inception in 2014.

Getting your music released on this imprint is no small feat, and for many newly emerging artists, achieving this might just be the feather in their cap needed to launch a DJ career. But this label is by no means just a space for newcomers; Trau-ma’s “Traumatismo” VA series has welcomed some truly standout acts over the years, and their latest 25th edition is no exception.

The first track on the compilation is titled “Agape,” a pleasantly melodic cut from Hanover’s rising star, dxrvo. Unlike most of his previous output, this cut utilizes frequently changing chord progressions, adding just a dash of old school Trance to the recipe. Taking on a far less abrasive approach than one might expect from a release on trau-ma, this opening track is surprisingly gentle and soothing but maintains a driving foundation that allows it to work wonders in a club or warehouse setting. Next is the second track, “Drums” by Italian-born, Berlin-based producer, Loris D’ettore. Gradually picking up the pace and energy, this track incorporates dubby delays and a wide stereo field to create an atmospheric joyride. A dramatic breakdown around the halfway mark allows the groove to breathe and the beat to take precedence.

Next is the stripped back cut, “Detellos,” from up and coming producer, Chris Path. Though seemingly new to releasing music, or at least under this particular production alias, Path’s track shines and kicks off the more “pure” hypnotic Techno sound on the compilation. Delicate, glistening textures creep in and hardly ever relent. Occasional low pass filter sweeps enhance the track’s breakdowns and build ups and help to create a mystifying experience perfect for a dimly lit dance floor. Last but not least is the closing track “Getting Me Down” by Ket Robinson. Utilizing a similar Techno structure as the track before it, only with far more drive and intensity, this track is for those that want to break a sweat. Waves of bit-crushed distortion saturate the many layers of rolling percussion, keeping the mix free of stagnation and thoroughly engaging throughout.

Saving the most intense for last is often the right decision, and trau-ma once again proves through this VA compilation that they are at the forefront of delivering top-tier productions from some of the best producers from around the world; an enjoyable listening experience with the perfect amount of variety.
