Cleveland underground Techno aficionado SPKRFACE releases their debut “Aberration of Light” album on Spain’s notorious Subsist Records with a selection of 10 pristine cuts ranging in temperament and mood for any selective Techno ear.
It’s no secret that impossible environments provide tangible growth for those that choose to stand apart from the overwhelming vast majority in any range of artistry. In the musical realm, it is usually in environments where a style or genre is underrepresented or a relatively well-kept secret that some of the most powerful underground productions have made their way into the overall purview. In a world where newer electronic styles have taken the spotlight for a vast majority of newer listeners, certain regions find themselves with an under-represented, underground Techno artistry and production base. While to some this may seemingly be a disparaging thought rife with reasons not to create in veins that aren’t as well received in their region, for others this allows for a creative space free from limitations or inhibitions in its own right.
One such artist has been toiling away at their craft and meticulously been curating a name for themself in their uniquely powerful productions that stand apart from the overwhelming release schedules and outpouring of content in the overall scope of Techno music. Dating back to inception in 2013, SPKRFACE has been putting out a consistent release schedule covering a well-articulated selection of House, Techno, Acid, and beyond that’s shown a gradual evolution and knowledge of all things Techno centric in nature. It wasn’t until 2017 however, that this underground representative released their first EP titled “Swimming Backwards” focused heavily on more Electronica and LoFi Acid styles in stark contrast to their latest Subsist Records release.
The “Aberration of Light” release is a power play LP featuring 10 distinct cuts of heavy and deeper-inspired Techno styles. Off-time stabs coupled with rolling kick and bass sequences create an homage to the original Detroit tonal structures while still making a space for the new and forward thinking Techno influences.
While not necessarily a new twist on SPKRFACE’s influence or musical style, “Aberration of Light” does showcase the artist’s ability to curate a singular focus on whatever they put their mind to musically. It is a truly powerful album with tons of replayability. Each track is well suited for any crate digger’s selection and worthy of a nod for its inspiring sound design and tactful work.
