Berlin’s newly emerging techno label, Primal Instinct, stands out from the herd with its very first release titled “Minimum One Post A Week” as an EP from one of Europe’s most exciting new duos, Funk Assault.
Funk Assault, a brand new techno super-duo unifying the combined genius of Alarico and Chlär, just debuted an incredible first EP. The two producers frequently put out exceptional tracks on some truly notable labels, but even they would be the first to tell you that when they work together, their music is even better. As individuals, their careers have rapidly accelerated in recent years, with each making waves as some of Berlin’s most exciting new acts, but this new combined alias feels different and something truly special. The EP, humorously titled Minimum One Post A Week, pokes fun at the current state of rave/DJ culture, all while demonstrating to the younger generations just how it should be done.
Starting things off is the bombastic cut, “Signing Your Own Post.” Raw and straight to the point, this is one seriously impactful tune with a peculiar looseness that makes it sound like it’s improvised in the best possible way—like it’s being mixed on the fly. Similarly, track two is another dancefloor heater. More vocal-centric than the first cut, “Screenshots of Compliments” features a hard, funky groove perfect for the warehouse or club. Moments like these on the EP perfectly exemplify just how good their two production styles can sound when brought together, even if true fans of their previous productions can pick out some of their signature characteristics in each tune.
Next are the incredibly festive tracks, “I Am A DJ Too” and “Pre-Gig Selfie.” As the tempo increases, the record suddenly shifts away from the solid, groovy, inviting foundations into a peak-time-DJs dream come true. To close things out, Funk Assault reveals a few more tricks up their sleeves. The last track on the vinyl version of the EP, “That’s The Funk Assault,” takes things back a few decades with a revamped and reinvigorated techno rendition of a track by the Beastie Boys, while the Bandcamp version concludes with a long-withheld digital bonus dating back to 2017. This fun, provocative cut is the cherry on top for this outstanding release.
While this EP was only recently released on vinyl, it unsurprisingly was quick to sell out. You know what that means. Support Funk Assault with a digital download of the EP via the Bandcamp page, linked above.
