Confidential Recipe – “Rave Generator” EP (RSPX) [July 14, 2023]

The Venezuelan wonder, Confidential Recipe, is back in action with an enigmatic EP dubbed “Rave Generator”. The seven-track release is indulgent, devious, and dripping in ‘90s Techno energy. Picture renegades, pacifiers, Jncos, and eyes wide as saucers, except bring it 30 years forward into the modern day.

“Rave Generator” features a dope remix from breakbeat maestro Dagga and a warehouse-style acapella belter from ELO. The poignant release is clear in its directive journey; strictly dancefloor grooves take the mastering and sonic technology of the present and meld it with the four-to-the-floor love tunes of the early ‘90s. Formally known as DJ Cuyi, Confidential Recipe cut his teeth in the Hard Techno community of Venezuela before transplanting to Bogota and harnessing styles of Techno, House, and Electro. In the latest output, the producer/DJ supplies devious dance cuts for the underground dancefloor.

The self-titled debut track utilizes sharp percussion and cheeky synths coupled with classic Dub Reggae vocal samples to wonderful effect. The choppy cadence keeps the vibe cheery but with a tinge of sinister debauchery. The second track, “U Can’t Hide,” hosts Dagga in collaboration with Confidential and begins with the timeless sample from Mobb Deeps’ “Survival of the fittest” chanting ‘You can’t hide forever, from these streets we done took’. Raw and muffled kicks rumble alongside an old-school piano riff, maintaining the Summer of Love aesthetic perfectly.

“TUUL2” builds up with sophisticated drums, including brassy hats and snare shots—aptly named for its broken-down samples just begging to be mixed into or out of. “Minimalz” opts for a hypnotic groove, and you guessed it, more high hats. It cleverly installs Jackin’ House samples alongside dynamic kick and clap progressions. Once again, as the name suggests, the track keeps things simple but powerful and sticks close to the EP’s spirit.

“LAB01” turns the spaceship’s orbit to full-blown Techno as synths chime with reverb and delay. Eerie and spacey, the track spirals outward before reeling back into the signature, fast-paced drum work. ELO lends his services on “Everyday,” pumping warbled and warped keys with a funky, low-end rhythm; a sure-fire club killer. The EP’s final track ends on a high note, with organ-like mids and echoing vocal samples. Minimal and groovy, the beat seemingly never ends.

“Rave Generator” by Confidential Recipe successfully adds to the lineage of trendy jams with a throwback to the early days of ‘90s rave Techno. The expertly procured and satisfyingly delivered rave anthems across this EP will surely see clubs and warehouses worldwide.
