Peryl & Rødhåd – “KALLAIT” (WSNWG013) [October 13, 2023]

The latest release on Rødhåd’s WSNWG imprint sees him teaming up with Berlin-based producer and live performer, Peryl. “KALLAIT” is a gem forged under the pressure of a deep subterranean rave cave.

The duo’s sensibilities coalesce magnificently together in this solid five-tracker. Rødhåd’s command of the groove demands respect, and Peryl brings a lush improvisational feel in the synths that imbues the tracks with life.

The release opens with “KALLAIT 01″—a track that submerges you into the album’s sonic realm like a diver taking one last breath before descending into the abyss. Underwater bubbly synths contrast wonderfully with the more driving bottom end; there’s definitely a wetness to this track. The kick has the perfect attack and just subtly ducks the atmospheric elements. adding to that driving sound. Peryl and Rødhåd’s mastery lies in their ability to craft music that delves deep into the listener’s psyche, opting for depth and mood.

The second track, “KALLAIT 02,” propels the album forward with its mesmerizing combination of rolling bassline and intricate rhythm structure. A polyrhythmic synth adds groove with a descending ostinato that makes the track feel like it’s tripping over itself, yet always driving forward.

As we venture deeper into the album, “KALLAIT 03” embraces the raw and dirty essence of proper Techno with a distorted kick and crunchy percussion. The track has a sort of ‘deep fried’ flavor while still having plenty of creamy, space-y atmospherics to put you in a trance.

“KALLAIT 04” is the penultimate track that brings the energy to its crescendo and provides a perfect mid-set transition to get the dancefloor moving. Embracing the power of Techno’s ability to iterate on a simple hook, the sonic exploration here rumbles with distortion and power. The energy builds and builds at a breakneck speed, with the synths morphing into new forms as the track unfolds towards its massive final drop.

The album’s final offering, “KALLAIT 05,” is a digital-only bonus, but don’t sleep on this one, vinyl heads! It serves as a fitting conclusion to this sonic voyage and exudes a sense of finality and resolution, leaving the listener with a lingering feeling of fulfillment and closure. The track’s evocative soundscapes and finely-tuned production really bring it home.

Every track on this record is a banger should make one itch to give them a run on the dancefloor. Peryl and Rødhåd’s “KALLAIT” album is a testament to the boundless creativity and innovation within the Techno genre. Their ability to craft a sense of space and build futuristic sounds is a remarkable achievement.
