The Dutch duo ARKVS delivers an exceptional 5th release for Netherland’s next big Techno imprint, Pleistocene Future.
Over the course of a year, Pleistocene Future has quickly developed into an exciting new Techno imprint that’s worth keeping an eye on. Ran by the Netherlands’ rising star Forkowski, the label has consistently put out several, high-quality, 4-track EPs, each accompanied by striking album artwork that’s become more and more aesthetically pleasing with each new edition. The label’s latest output, “Pleistocene Future 5”, sets the bar high for what we can expect from this exciting new label.
ARKVS’ introductory track “Surcharge” starts things off with a bang. From the get-go, the two producers cut to the chase with an epic pad, frantic shakers, and a booming kick. Subtle textures come creeping in, overlaying the already intricate foundation, helping to create anticipation for what’s to come. The next track, “Neoprene”, is much more textural and percussive. When ARKVS bring in their kick drums for a drop, it is simply electrifying. At several moments of this track, it becomes nearly impossible to resist the urge to bob one’s head and dance. This tune is perfectly suited for the warehouse, and ARKVS are only getting started.
Making a switch to a deeper, more brooding sound is the third cut, “Crave Slave”. Crisp hats cut through the mix like sharp knives, while a modular synth lead gradually boils over. Not too busy, but not too repetitive either, this track’s fast-paced and ever-evolving melody is perfectly suited for the peak time. Last is ARKVS’ final hoorah, “Steam”. At this point, you’ve likely gotten a feel for ARKVS’ style and technique which will help prepare you for the grueling, rapid-fire percussive suite utilized in this grand finale. As the fast-paced arpeggio builds, panning far and wide throughout the stereo field, several drum fills help to give the track spontaneity and character. When it finally drops, “Steam” unravels into a total frenzy that is sure to ignite dance floors all around the globe.
