Following his recent release on Planet Rhythm, Hamburg’s very own OFF / GRID returns for a 2nd time to the Dutch-based label with “Funk In The Trunk” EP.
Much like his “Lost In Pace” EP, these new tracks off his latest Planet Rhythm EP seem to be intricately arranged. All 4 tracks across OFF / GRID’s “Funk In The Trunk” EP are brimming with late-night energy, just before the sun begins to rise.
The rising German DJ has been creating a buzz since his Tresor appearance earlier in the year. New Faces hosted by Marina George brought him quite a bit of attention. After hearing his “Resistance” EP release on the Italian Label “UNCAGE,” she knew his sound was parallel with the sounds of the Berlin club. Playing a proper set at one of the Techno meccas can change your career as a DJ, and this seems to be the case for OFF / GRID. Shortly following his performance was the first release with Planet Rhythm, “Lost in Pace” EP, which had been planned for months prior—perfect timing for the promising talent.
The “Funk in the Trunk” opening title track is the fastest of them all, kicking off the EP with high energy and hypnotic patterns. Perfect for 5AM at some club in Germany, it even sounds like those early 2000’s Love Parade sets. The nostalgic keys truly take you back, and the energy drives straight through from start to finish with very little room to breathe. It certainly sets the tone for the rest of the project.
“Respect The Technique” follows with a slightly slower tempo, however it still manages to bring just as much energy and groove as the initial offering. Filled with roaring rolling drums, it is an infectious number that is impossible not to dance to. There is a small, but noticeable progression throughout the track, but it does not affect the hypnotic state induced during an intimate listen. There’s even some hidden sounds of euphoria which keep the track warm and full of light.
This entire EP is nothing short of brilliant. “Funk In The Trunk” is a fast-paced groove loaded with energy. All four tracks are dedicated to those hardcore dancefloor warriors who never miss a beat. The release defies today’s status quo and shows that you don’t need 170BPM to maintain the crowd’s attention while still playing at a high pace.
Keep an ear out for more exciting releases from OFF / GRID in the coming future!
