Temudo – “Shapeless” EP (Hayes) [January 19th, 2024]

We are only a couple weeks into January, and there’s a really great deluge of tracks out this week by many heavy hitters in the Techno genre, of whom we’ve linked below at the bottom of this review. What makes Temudo stand out, in particular though, is the energy, the deep understanding of the mechanics of the tracks, a full knowledge of what’s going on within them, and also the willingness to experiment with them in a style that’s all his own.

The defining characteristics of this “Shapeless” release include the play with atmospheres—like the interplay of consonance and dissonance within a groove-based setting on “D is For Dissonance”. There is the full-on banging, funky, shoulder-dipping, headbanging, and frenetic energy of “Rap Over This”. Then there is the deep Hardgroove aesthetics and thumbing of his nose at resonance in the “Ecosystem Track.” Even the stern and serious grooves of the “Da Papps” mixes. And then there’s the sludgy filter-drenched hand drums and hypnotic states in “The Zone.”

Why is this release so fire? Possibly it’s the boldness, and you can tell Temudo is asking questions of himself at every turn. When he answers them, there’s the joy shared in the discovery. Having an impeccable sense of groove timing and a fluid sense of oneness with his medium and expression certainly can’t be beaten. To top it off, the Hayes collective has thrown down for mastering with Simon at the Exchange for this release, so it already sounds like an instant classic.
